For my work experience I had the opportunity to work at Raystede Animal Welfare Center in Ringmer. Each day I worked in a different sector with a different type of animal.
On the Monday I worked in small animals where I learnt about the main jobs such as cleaning out cages, feeding all the animals, daily health checks and talking to visitors about all the different small animals. The animals they had their were Hamsters, Degus, Gerbils, Rabbits, Rats, Chinchillas and Mice!
On Tuesday I worked in the Cattery where I cleaned out all their cages, inside and out, fed them and then spend a majority of the afternoon socializing with them.
On Wednesday, it was my first day in the Kennels and this was by far my favourite section! I worked with many dogs all of which I fell in love with! I played with dogs ranging from German Shepard's to Border Collies, from Visler X's to Rottweilers and from Terriers to Chihuahuas! I cleaned their runs, cleaned the floors, bathed them, walked them and played with them!
On the Thursday I got the opportunity to work in the Equine department. This section is different to the others in the fact that it doesn't take in and then give the horses and donkeys up for adoption, instead it is more like a refuge for the animals to live out their days after being rescued. I met many amazing animals. They have 3 horses: Master Boffin a 26year old Bay gelding, who I got to long-rein, lunge and groom; his girlfriend, Connie who I also got to groom; Morgan, an ex-dressage horse whom I got to lunge; and Cascade who I didn't have the chance to work with. They also have many ponies: The Falabella X Miniature Shetland called Purdie who was born with 'club foot'; Saul, a pony that is completely blind; Sparky, Remy, Cloud and Blue who are all Grey ponies; Purdie's best pony friend Seamus; A skewbald Shetland Albert; Blue's best friend Danny and a little Shetland called Cherry. Seeing as I have a soft-spot for horses and donkeys I truly loved this day. It also included working with their goats, sheep and llamas!
On Friday it was my final day and I decided to go back to working in the Kennels.
I had such an amazing time their and would recommend anyone wanting to buy a new pet to go their local rescue center to help support all their hard work.
